 Regardless, I love building model railroads and (despite my limitations) I've somehow managed to put together a number of them over the years. No, I don't do scratchbuilding, I don't build grandiose wooden benchwork, I don't hand-lay track, I don't sculpt and carve magnificent mountain ranges, I don't plot and plan every bush, rock and blade of grass, I don't model "prototypes". Hell, I don't even "operate" my railroads - I just like to watch my trains run around in circles. In short, I am a mediocre modeler.
The good news is that the model railroading industry has come a long way in the past thirty-some years, and there are now many quick and easy short-cuts designed for the great mediocre majority. Even limited modelers such as myself can now stumble along and somehow cobble together model railroads that are, well... I dunno... Adequate? Respectable? Not completely laughable?
I've documented some of my layout-building experiences on the pages below. Hopefully you'll find some inspiration and some ideas. And if not, chances are you'll at least be amused by some of my various frustrations, misadventures, misdeeds and screw-ups. |

 It opened March 5, 1994. In May 1996 I started building Westport which has been operational since February 1997. Westport was built following an article by John R. Decker "The yard at Westport" in MR Sep. 83. |

 Although the HO layout in my basement is gone, the Allegheny Midland has not ceased to exist. A short segment of the AM main line is being built as part of Allen McClelland's new Virginian & Ohio layout, in fact, and AM motive power and equipment from the 1960s and '70s will one day soon operate there. Together, we continue to develop concepts for joint AM-V&O (and Virginia Midland, Steve King's N scale railroad, the third railroad in the Appalachian Lines) operations. |

 FROM THE TURN OF THE CENTURY UNTIL 1945, it was possible to take a wonderful train ride from Merced in the San Joaquin Valley to El Portal, California to visit Yosemite National Park. Rather than endure dusty roads and undependable automobiles, vacationers could relax in Pullman accommodations or on the deck of a beautiful observation car and enjoy the scenery along the way. |

 What I'm building is a proto-freelance, HO scale layout depicting the line that runs from Louisville, MS., through Ackerman, Starkville, West Point, Artesia, Crawford and on to Meridian, MS. My main focus is to have fun running trains and not to be prototypical to an era or exact location. Most of the downtown Starkville area will be depicted fairly accurately while the rest of the layout will be fudged a little. This layout will be controlled by a DCC system and will be multi-deck in design. I will try to chronicle the design and construction of the layout on this page. As I mentioned, I love to run trains of all kind so you never know what you'll see on the Aberdeen Sub of the ICG. |

 Welcome to my New York Harbor Railroad web site. I will be documenting my design and construction of the layout here on this site. The location I have selected for my layout is on the West Side of Manhattan during 1947. The railroads included in my design are: The New York Central (30th Street Yard), Erie Railroad (28th Street Yard), The New York Terminal Stores Building, the Lehigh Valley Railroad (27th Street) and the New York Central's High Line. The Erie and the Lehigh Valley railroad where served by car float operations. The New York Central besides car floats was also served by the main line to 60th street yard and northward towards the Bronx. |

 The railroad is set in the late 1980's to early 1990's (roughly 1989-1994), which allows the operation of a few locomotives from Norfolk Southern's predecessors Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway, as well as a large variety of CSX Transportation predecessor paint schemes. |

 Choosing a specific railroad and region to model can be a tough decision for model railroaders simply because so many things look good. However for me the decision of railroad and region to model was pretty easy. I knew that I did not want to model the typical green grass and green tree layout. With that decision I figured a real good choice would be to model the desert. I decided to model a freelanced former Southern Pacific line from Southern California to Southwestern Arizona. The well-known modeler of the modern Union Pacific in the desert is Pelle Soeborg. Although my current layout resembles his and it has been inspiring for me I often feel that I have to remind other model railroaders that I did not copy his layout. I planned and started building my layout months before I ever heard of him and saw his phenomenal work. His work has been featured many of times in Model Railroader magazine and I enjoy seeing it every time. |

 The GM&O Eastern Division was conceived with the intent of providing a railroad which is as true to the protorype GM&O as possible within the constraints of available space. The railroad was designed with prototype operations in mind. As a result of the distance covered by the prototype the railroad was destined to be a multi-deck railroad. In our case we went with a maximum of FOUR decks.
On the GM&O we welcome all potential operators! We especially welcome young operators and those who are new to prototype operations. We work with you to help you learn not only our railroad but to learn about operating in a prototype manner so you can take those skills back to your own railroad and enhance it's "play value." |

 This web site will document the development of my model railroad empire. The empire is a joint effort involving my son and I. Progress on the empire will be slow, as work will be done sporadically on weekends when my son comes out to visit. He is the one with the natural 'knack' for construction, and will be doing the lion's share of the work. I, on the other hand, being a complete klutz, will be supplying the ideas and the helping hand and this project evolves. |

 The N Scale S&U was born in 1970 and it did not have a name at the time. I had toyed with calling it Liberty Lines. I liked the logo of the Jersey Central, probably because I saw it on steam locomotives near my house as a child and I thought that would be a nice basis for the Liberty Lines logo. |

 The RC&W is a free-lance bridge railroad set in the late 1950’s connecting Midwestern to Western locales beyond the railroad. The main yard, River City, is a division point between the East (Chicago) staging yard and the West (Los Angeles) staging yard. Thus both through freight and passenger trains crossing the layout in both directions and locals operating out of River City in both directions make for interesting operations. In addition, the American Steel Corp. has an integrated steel plant operating in River City, receiving raw materials from mines on the layout and shipping product in all directions. It also has in-process movements of coal, coke, ore, limestone, lime, scrap, hot metal, slag, and ingots handled by its own switch engines. |
